Canalys: Samsung shipped 53.5 million smartphones in Q2, Apple and Xiaomi are very close

Back in mid-July Canalys released its smartphone market share numbers for the second quarter (April to June). At that time, however, it didn’t also publish the actual number of shipments per brand. This has thankfully been remedied today.
So now we know that the overall sales reached 288.9 million units, going up 12% compared to Q2 of 2023. The market has now grown for three consecutive quarters.
Samsung sold the most smartphones in Q2 – 53.5 million. That said, its shipments only rose 1% compared to the year-ago quarter. The Korean company has a 19% market share, which continues to erode (it was 21% a year ago).
In second is Apple with 45.6 million shipments and a 16% market share. Its shipments grew by 6% and its market share dropped 1%. In third is Xiaomi with the biggest sales growth of the top five – 27%. It sold 42.3 million devices for a 15% market share.
vivo is in fourth with 25.9 million shipments and a 9% market share, showing strong 19% annual growth. In fifth is Transsion, the company behind the Tecno, Infinix, and iTel brands, which sold 25.5 million units and is thus very close to vivo, sitting at a similar 9% share of the pie. Transsion sales grew 12% compared to the year-ago quarter.
For the entire year, Canalys predicts mid-single digit growth for the smartphone market as a whole compared to 2023. “In 2025, with consumer demand remaining uncertain, especially in mature markets, vendors should focus on delivering innovative smartphone experiences to attract upgrade buyers, build a distinctive brand image and strengthen local operations to seize emerging opportunities”, said Senior Analyst Toby Zhu.
