Canalys: European smartphone market saw positive growth in Q1, Samsung retains top spot

The European smartphone market saw its first quarter with positive growth in Q1 following twelve consecutive quarters of declines in smartphone shipments. According to the latest Canalys report, 33.1 million smartphones were shipped in Europe during the January 1 – March 31 period which represents a 2% year-on-year growth. This was also the quarter with the highest recorded share of premium devices (priced ≥$800), accounting for 32% of all shipments.
Samsung secured the top spot with a 37% market share thanks to robust demand for its Galaxy S24 series. Samsung’s flagship S-series accounted for 4.3 million shipments in Europe which is a 58% increase compared to the same time last year.
Apple came in second with a 22% market share while boasting the top two best-selling phones – iPhone 15 Pro Max which sold 2.6 million units and iPhone 15 Pro which accounted for 1.6 million shipments. Xiaomi came in third place with a 16% market share thanks to strong demand for budget devices like the Redmi 13C (1.2M) and Redmi Note 13 4G (1.1M).
Motorola shipped 2.1 million units and took 6% of the market while Honor had 1 million shipments and 3% market share. Looking ahead, Canalys analysts predict 1% growth for the remainder of the year.
