After announcing that it would be leaving its San Francisco home last month, X has now confirmed that it’s vacating its iconic Market Street building in two weeks.
As reported by Fortune:
“In a brief note to staff on Thursday, the company formerly known as Twitter announced that its longtime office and global headquarters in San Francisco will close in two weeks, on Sept. 13, according to one person familiar with the announcement.”
That’s Friday the 13th, for those into superstition and the like.
X’s remaining staff are being told that they’ll be relocated to its offices in San Jose or Palo Alto, while X also intends to establish a new HQ in Texas, where Elon Musk’s other businesses are based.
How many of X’s staff will be forced to relocate to Texas remains unclear.
It’s a major shift for the company, which has been based in its Market Street HQ for 12 years.

X owner Elon Musk vowed to move X out of San Francisco back in July, after California Governor Gavin Newsom signed new legislation that stops local school districts from notifying parents if their child starts using different pronouns, or identifies as a different gender than what’s on their school record.
Musk, who has his own experience with a child transitioning, believes that the current “woke” education system is indoctrinating, and effectively brainwashing kids into sexual identity issues.
In a recent interview, Musk directly stated that “the woke mind virus” killed his son, leading to him having no contact with his now daughter. His daughter, meanwhile, has refuted his claims.
As a result of this law change, combined with problems related to homeless drug addicts around the office (which Musk has repeatedly highlighted since buying the company), Elon is now looking to move the company out of the state.
Which will be a gradual process, as forcing all of X’s staff to relocate will be a significant undertaking. But that seems to be the eventual goal, with X’s people now having to consider their travel and relocation requirements to continue working at the app.
So, the end of an era for the company, though for many, the company now has two distinct period anyway, with the pre and post-Elon experience being very different.
But in a physical and symbolic sense, this is a major transition, which is now set to become a reality for the business.
