The Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church in Washington D.C. recently pulled an “Uno reverse” move on the far-right extremist group, the Proud Boys. The church took ownership of the group’s trademark. However, the power move arrives just years after the group vandalized the church’s property. The incident reportedly occurred in 2020.
The church’s checkmate is definitely an undeniable legal win. However, it’s also a bold statement against hate.
Now, The Shade Room’s correspondent A.B. Burns-Tucker is breaking down why that is on ‘TSR Newz.’
More Details On The Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church’s Ownership Of The Proud Boy’s Trademark
According to Burns-Tucker, the Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church has been making history since 1838. Per the host, icons such as Frederick Douglas and Booker T. Washington walked through the church doors. And now, the church has made history again, legally owning the name of the Proud Boys.
Additionally, this all has happened after the Proud Boys got hit — and reportedly defaulted on — a judgment to pay $2.8 million in damages to the church. The damages were reportedly caused by the group destroying a Black Lives Matter sign at the location during a pro-Trump rally.
More Details On The Church’s Bold Move
The church’s bold move appears to mark the first time in the nation’s history that a Black institution has owned the rights of a white supremacist group.
“This ruling effectively prevents the Proud Boys from operating under their own name and profiting off their brand without the church’s approval. It is a significant legal precedent,” Burns-Tucker explains to viewers.
